Kari and Mike

It's been a wonderful start to the wedding season! Kari and Mike's wedding was so much fun to photograph. We knew some of the people in the wedding party, so that always brings a level of comfort to the day for all of us right away. When Kari got there, she said that she hadn't cried... yet. The photo below was maybe 20 minutes later ;) I don't know the whole story, but Kari had a necklace that she'd lost, and Mike bought her a new one as a wedding gift. Her cousin put it on for her, so she didn't see it until she looked in the mirror at herself for the first time.

Despite the semi-gloomy weather, we got outside for several photographs. Kari's cousin (personal attendant) was fabulous and made sure to put down a sheet under her dress and that 2-3 bridesmaids were helping her carry it around at all times.

Lynde and Tyler's wedding was SO much fun! Several of the people in the wedding party were people who we've photographed at other past weddings, so we had a lot of fun reconnections throughout the day. They were also so laid back but at the same time, incredibly happy!! It felt like we were friends, along for the celebration. It was a great way to kick off the (from here on out, nonstop) wedding season!

Changes, changes...

We're working on overhauling the studio this week - so if you drop by, please excuse the mess! We're doing spring (well, I guess you could almost say summer) cleaning, as well as painting and rearranging things. We have very few breaks in the schedule, so we sort of had to create one by blocking off some time to get it done already! If you haven't noticed the new logo on our blog page, we're trying to update our signs, business cards, brochures, and so forth to reflect that, too. We'll be away from our hard drives and work email for a few days, so please give us a call if you need anything! I'll try to post photos of the progress soon.

Mandy and Doug (Part 2)

Well, since the weather wasn't great on the day we'd scheduled for their engagement shoot - and it was too late to get into the Ralph, too - we met up on Monday to finish what we'd started. The wonderful staff at the Ralph allowed us to use their facilities, and it was a lot of fun! They were bummed that they couldn't get into the seating area / on the ice [due to construction], but we still had a great time capturing the logos and structure of the arena. We also went to the location where they will be married this summer for some outdoor photos. A few for your enjoyment:

Emma came in this afternoon for photos. They were just WAY too cute not to post right away :) It was her first experience in grass, and it made for some absolutely adorable photos!

Mandy and Doug (Part 1)

It never fails - if you plan to be outside for your photos on a certain day, it will rain! :p Luckily, Mandy was very calm about the unfortunate weather, and toward the end, we were still able to sneak out and get a few photos by the beautifully blooming trees! Today, we headed over to campus to finish their engagement photos at the Ralph and near the Spiritual Center, where their wedding will take place. Victoria and Jakob

Okay, if I can ever say that a couple must be perfect for each other, it HAS to be true with Victoria and Jakob. It was fun to watch them interact during their engagement session, and I had a lot of laughs. Victoria was in "Hair", and I took the cast photos for the show, and now we'll be doing her wedding photographs in October. It's at the Masonic (Kem) Temple - a very cool location that we haven't covered yet. We're very excited!

Their theatrical side came out at the end [to say the least]... we got a lot of honks in the street :D

Owen, Ava, and Elise

Owen came in for a photoshoot with his sisters one week after his sisters came in for North Dakota Ballet Photos. He's in the stage where he doesn't really want his mom to leave his side, but we were happy to get a few great smiles out of him before he remembered how attached he was :) Thanks Ava and Elise, you did a great job entertaining - you are wonderful big sisters!

The girls did a jumping photo with the company as well as during this shoot - they really know how to rock the jumping shots!

Aaden came in for photos on Friday with his brother Lucas. It was mostly supposed to be about him this time, but Lucas really liked to be behind the camera too. Our "snap while they play" philosophy worked really well with them; boys tend to not sit still and just like to play with things. But if you can catch them as they run around or look up from what they are doing, you can get some great shots. Here are a few:

Launching the "Giving Back" Program!

We have been feeling very blessed, and we've decided to start a "Giving Back" program here at Reeves to pass that joy along to others in our community. Every month, we will pick a person, family, cause or organization that we believe is deserving of some financial help. We will donate a minimum of 5% of all regular print sales to that cause. We'll also be doing a free photoshoot with the person/family/organization (if they are local, willing, and able) before their month of sponsorship. They'll have a chance to share their story in writing, which we will post to the blog along with their photos.

For the month of June, we have decided to donate those profits to Bobbi Jo Brenner and her husband Willi. They are an amazing couple, and we are blessed to know them. Bobbi Jo has been on dialysis for 14 years, and just received a kidney transplant TODAY! We couldn't be more excited for them! Bobbi Jo has had two other transplants in the past, both of which failed (one of which wasn't a good match from the start, and the other due to a blood clot), so we are praying that "the third time's the charm" :) The kidney was donated by Willi's sister, and it's an incredibly touching story. As you can imagine, several weeks at Mayo clinic, on top of having done dialysis for 4-5 days a week for 14 years, is a huge financial burden, and we want to help alleviate a bit of the financial stress. (Photo below taken during dialysis in March).

In July, we'll be giving to Josh, Yvonne and Nick Jones (photo below taken just before Christmas of 2009). Nick was recently diagnosed with Alexander's disease, and will be traveling to Mayo clinic and doing a lot of physical therapy in the near future.

We'll let you know what's on the schedule after that soon-- we still have a lot to sort out and get ready for this program :) Thank you SO much for following our blog, coming to our studio for photographs and now, for the financial blessings that these families will be receiving. We truly appreciate you!

Adam won the second place prize at the cutest baby contest - several months back - on the 4th of July! The contest is for babies up to 12 months, so as you can see, he's grown up a lot since then. We'll post more information on our blog a few weeks beforehand, so be watching for that. Ame has been in to the studio a few times with her girls, and once with Sean and his kids, too. We did the cutest Christmas card / Save the date card last year for them. The design for it was all her idea:

Now Sean and Ame's big day is approaching. Sadly, we are unable to photograph their wedding because they chose a June date and we were all booked up-- but we know it will be beautiful! They will be getting married outside near Detroit Lakes. We were excited to be able to do their engagement photos, though. It's always so touching when a groom-to-be cannot stop smiling during the engagement session. :)

Nate

It's always a bummer when it rains on the day of a senior session, like it did for Nate. Luckily, I had a little time the next morning, which was beautiful, so we were able to have him come back and end up with a nice combination of indoor and outdoor photos, as well as a trip to Red River's choir room for some photos with the grand piano. I took his sister's photos a couple years ago-- when his mom called to book the session and said his last name, I said "Did your daughter Karen come here a couple years ago?" Karen was shocked that I remembered her! I usually remember my clients, though :) ... and feel horrible if I DON'T remember someone!

Freedom Church - Staff & Families

Freedom Church is located downtown on Third Street in the old Scott's Music storefront. It's a really relaxed atmosphere, with a coffee-shop feel on one side and the relaxed worship center area on the other. I met Nathan and Mary, the lead pastors, through a friend a couple years ago (we were all shocked at how quickly the time passed since we first met!) and I also took their son's senior photos last year.

They needed some photos of the staff for their website and beyond, so they asked me to come over to take them. It was fun, and of course, the kids stole the show :) Here are a few...

Okay, the cute kids just keep rolling on in... here's Landon. He loves tractors, and trains! The expression in the first photo is when he heard the train whistle outside the studio, right when we were about to start photos. So we went out to let him watch it go by. We did photographs for 2 weddings last week where we didn't photograph the ceremony, we just took the formals. Noelle and Jeff

Noelle and Jeff were married on Saturday. We lucked out with a beautiful day in March (no blizzards or sleet, yay!) and I absolutely loved the location too-- very beautiful architecture. The couple was very laid back and knows how to have fun (which I knew from their engagement photos), and so did their wedding party... Usually, with just 3-4 bridesmaids/groomsmen, it's hard to get them all to "get into it" and do the same thing at the same time. But this group? They just got it-- they all had fun with each and every photo we took, and the whole process was fun and relaxed.

They had a friend who is a photography student and she covered the reception and wedding ceremony-- we just did the formals and some fun couple shots. For the 3 hours we spent with Noelle, Jeff and the wedding party, though, we had a blast :) Take a peek:

I don't know what to do with all the cute kids that have been coming in lately, they are just too adorable! I've been having a blast with families and kids in the past few weeks, and every session, I can't seem narrow down to just a few for the blog. I want to share them all!

Miss Rylee has a lot of personality, as you can see! It was so much fun taking her pictures again-- every time we'd finish a pose, she ran over to give mom and dad a high-five. :) She knew how to pose right away, and we also had a lot of fun-- thus, her smile emerged naturally. I've known Caleb's family for many years, although I hadn't seen him in a really long time (probably since I was in high school!). We rescheduled about 4 times, but we finally got a time to work for both of us in March. Fundraiser Event

We like to give back to the community whenever possible. We took these photos of some high school students who are doing a recital benefit for a man who was injured in a motorcycle accident, and they will use them to promote the event. We'll post more information about it soon!

Taylor has grown up so much! I've taken photos of her enough times that I no longer can keep count... I know it's at least 5 different sessions. It's always fun to watch the little ones grow up!

She's in her "no" stage, and she wasn't really excited to sit in one place or be told what to do. But our philosophy is that eventually, they'll smile, so we let them play and do their thing until it comes out. We got some great photos :)

Finn

Sometimes, getting your picture taken can be scary. Especially when you are 14 months old! Finn is such a cute little guy. After about 4 minutes of snapping photos, he got really spooked about the whole process. Despite toys and tickling, we got a few fleeting smiles, but he didn't really want to sit on his own anymore; he needed mom with him. I totally understand :)

But if there's one thing I've learned over the years of taking photos of kids who aren't "feeling" it, it's to be patient. Just wait... eventually they will stop crying, and they will smile or look at the camera or, even, I've learned to just wait for that moment between or during cries that it looks like a smile (other than the tears welling in the corners of the eyes, right?)

I think his mom felt like it was a total flop-- but I disagree :) We might bring big brother Owen in another day to see if he can loosen Finn up...

The Bridwell family was a lot of fun today :) Tyler (dad) just came back from a 10 month deployment, so it was family photo time again. To be honest, I never would have guessed that he'd been away at all-- the boys cling to him and listen to his directions so well that you'd think he had been at home with them every night since they were born.

The boys were adorable-- but it was a little hard to get them to look at the camera and smile. With some effort, though, including a lot of tickling and my ridiculously funny behavior (adults must think I'm nuts, but whatever makes them smile, right?....), we were able to get some memorable family photos.

Alexa was really nervous when she came in, but I think the session went really well! She was up for braving the cold (which is always appreciated, since I like doing outdoor photos), and we also had fun in the studio also. This is the third time I've taken Lincoln's photos, if you include when he was still in his mommy's tummy :) I had the pleasure of taking maternity photos with his wonderful parents, and then baby photos after he was born as well. Now, he's one year old. And his expressions are priceless! I think that his parents will have to make a series of the many faces of Lincoln. He just laughed and clapped and played and had a great time having his photo taken...

Last time I took photos of Caius, he was tiny... his dad held him in one hand, and a football in the other. Here's a shot from back then:

Now, look at him! What a big boy! He wasn't exactly excited about this whole "getting pictures taken at a studio behind big flashing lights with mom not right next to me" thing-- AND he was teething-- but with a little patience, we got him to warm up to the camera. Turns out, if you tease him with his pacifier, he smiles like crazy. Those teeth are sure coming in there, Caius!

My husband let me sneak away for a portion of an hour on Valentine's day to do this photoshoot with Sandy and Adam (Which was okay, it gave him a chance to prepare for our time together!)... ;)

Interestingly enough, she's a graphic design major (which goes hand-in-hand with photography) and he's in Aviation.... I'm (obviously) a photographer/designer and my husband is a pilot/flight instructor... and my assistant is a photography major and her boyfriend is also a pilot. So I guess photography/designers and pilots work well together :)

Ryan and Ale had maternity photos done just in time-- (no, baby didn't come yet!) ;) Ryan is leaving on Monday for Korea for a year! So I know that they both will cherish these photos of them and baby boy. Good luck, Ryan, and thanks for serving our country!

Valentine's Day is fast approaching! Here are a few fun options for the day of love:

1. For your children, bring them in to have photos taken for personalized Valentines! We'll do a quick session (15 minutes for $10) and create a card for you. We have a few sizes and options available, including double-sided 4x5.5, or a single-sided 2x3 photo card. Call or email us for more information.

2. Husbands, has it been too long since you've had a photo taken with your wife? Or since she's had a nice photo taken of herself? Purchase a gift certificate for a photography session, and we'll include the first 5x7 print free!

We always enjoy taking group photos for NDBC-- It's sure a challenge getting all of the kids on stage at one time, but they were so cooperative and listened really well. As I was trying to help position and pose the little girls in front, one asked me "So, are you like the boss?" :) Very cute!

We took photos of Tyr this summer, but he also wanted some taken with his snowboard. We were lucky to catch that amazingly beautiful day last week with the frozen frost decorating the trees. It was so much fun to do these photos...

Elijah was born premature and had been in the hospital almost his entire life. He was able to go home a few days before Christmas, though - yay!
